SIERRA CLUB, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

Councilmember Nadeau is a stalwart environmental ally, voting for our key priorities, co-sponsoring most of the major legislation we’ve sought to enact, and working to reduce waste going to landfills and incinerators.

“Brianne Nadeau has been a vital partner to the environmental community and we want to continue to work with her on environmental priorities,” said Susan Schorr, chair of the Sierra DC Chapter Zero Waste Committee. “Chairing the committee with oversight of the Department of Public Works, Councilmember Nadeau worked hard to ensure the successful launch of DC’s curbside compost pilot, which has proven popular and effective. She also worked closely with the Sierra Club and environmental stakeholders to ensure the department hired a seasoned zero waste professional to lead the department's Office of Waste Diversion. We need to keep Brianne Nadeau on the DC Council.”

DC LATINO CAUCUS

The DC Latino Caucus, an affiliate of the DC Democratic Party, supports longtime public servants and elected Democratic Councilmembers Charles Allen and Brianne Nadeau against recent efforts launched to recall them in response to the increase in violent city crime. We urge citizens in Wards 1 and 6 to reject these recall measures. We also call on our colleagues at the DC Democratic Party to carefully craft an appropriate response that balances the promotion of democracy and the protection of our home rule against Republican and outside interference.

The leadership and members of our organization are as frustrated as everyone else with the clear increase in violent crime impacting our city—and we also demand solutions. Indeed, Latinos, immigrants, and other Brown and Black communities are most often the victims of such crimes, whether that be in our homes, underinvested neighborhoods, construction work sites, small businesses, and elsewhere. But we also think that the best approach is to take a careful look at the true causes of the current crime surge in our city, rather than acting out of anger to recall public officials with longstanding records of ethical and dedicated public service. Councilmembers Allen and Nadeau, and the rest of the Council, have done their imperfect best in attempting to balance the urgent needs for public safety in our city with the desire to ensure the equitable policing of our communities.

“The men and women who keep our buildings safe and clean support Brianne Nadeau because of her strong leadership championing bills that make a measurable difference in their lives. The last thing low-wage workers need is a needless recall campaign that offers no reality-based solutions that could jeopardize all of the gains they’ve made.”

DC For Democracy logo

DC FOR DEMOCRACY

DC for Democracy (DC4D) members overwhelmingly voted to endorse Charles Allen and Brianne Nadeu for re-election in 2022, just over a year ago. We stand firmly by them now, as they face recall efforts led by people who propose no solutions and whose efforts are distracting from solving the very problem they are worried about.

Charles Allen and Brianne Nadeau earned the endorsement of DC for Democracy members for their devoted efforts to build a healthier city where residents are treated with dignity and have resources to thrive. They led the effort in 2021 for legislation that helped thousands of residents move from homelessness to a home, improved the low pay of early childhood education teachers, and created a basic income program – all funded through increasing income taxes on DC’s highest-income residents. Allen and Nadeau have promoted accessible and affordable transportation; expanded voting rights; stronger rent control; healthier homes, and more.

AMALGAMATED TRANSIT UNION LOCAL 689

Today, Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 689, representing over 15,000 transit workers and retirees throughout the Metro Washington area, including WMATA, MetroAccess, DC Circulator, and Streetcar, issued strong endorsements of Councilmembers Charles Allen (Ward 6) and Brianne Nadeau (Ward 1). Both Councilmembers have faced recall challenges that would mark firsts in the District’s history for potential removal. …..

“Brianne Nadeau is a force for making DC a fairer and stronger city,” Local 689 President Jackson explained. “If you look at her record you’ll find a tireless advocate for working families, government accountability, and smart policy. Be it 24 hour bus service, vision zero, criminal justice reform, or fixing our 911 service, Brianne delivers. We remember her support during the Circulator strike especially.”

WARD ONE DEMOCRATS

This attempt to recall Councilmember Nadeau is a misguided endeavor aimed at blaming her for a regional surge in crime. This campaign is a futile expenditure of energy, attention, and taxpayer funds that won’t substantially enhance safety in our neighborhood or city.

One can oppose this recall effort while simultaneously acknowledging that crime is a concern in DC, affecting many residents who have either been victims themselves, know someone who has, or fear potential victimization.

In essence, this recall is a distraction at a critical time for DC. There are pressing community and national issues to address in 2024. If some Ward 1 voters are dissatisfied with Councilmember Nadeau’s service, the appropriate course is to recruit a candidate for the regular election cycle in 2026.

CCAN ACTION FUND

Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) Action Fund is disappointed by and opposes the two current campaigns to recall D.C. Councilmembers Charles Allen and Brianne Nadeau. When there is so much vital work before the Council, these campaigns are a distraction and a disservice to District residents. Both Councilmember Allen and Nadeau have proved themselves to be strong allies to the D.C. climate movement, and we deeply appreciate their work to make the District a healthier, cleaner, and more just place to live…

CCAN Action Fund is also disappointed by the effort to recall Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau from office. We deeply value working with CM Nadeau on critical efforts at the Council to advance building electrification and environmental justice, to move the District off methane gas, and to support her work for D.C. residents District-wide.

UNITE HERE LOCAL 25

UNITE HERE's DC affiliates are proud supporters of [Councilmembers Nadeau and Allen], who have been champions for working families and their safety in the District.

"Our members are predominantly Black and Brown and come from communities for whom public safety is a top priority," said Paul Schwalb, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of UNITE HERE Local 25. "Councilmembers Allen and Nadeau have clear records of legislating to ensure that our members can work and live safely and with dignity in DC.

“This recall effort is an absurd stunt driven by out-of-touch DC residents that voters should roundly reject."

GREATER GREATER WASHINGTON

Allen and Nadeau have solid track records of supporting more housing, more affordable housing, frequent and reliable public transportation, and fewer trips by car in the District—the issues on which GGWash bases our endorsements. It should not come as a surprise that we would like the politicians who have been longtime champions of our preferred policies to remain in office, and that we consider attempts to recall them disruptive to their, and our, work.
